 Dutchmen Dynamite
Guilderland takes 26-0 lead, routs Schenectady in Class AA

GUILDERLAND -- A near-perfect effort in the first half Guilderland to a 26-0 lead en route to a 32-13 win over Schenectady in a Section II Class AA playoff game Saturday afternoon.

Senior quarterback Andrew Smith was flawless running the offense for Guilderland (7-1).

The Dutchmen's stubborn defense, led by linebacker Paul Malamood, put the clamps on running back Marc Thompson and dropped the Patriots to 4-4

Guilderland scored on its first three possessions, focusing on running while mixing in timely passes.

Leading 20-0 with just under one minute remaining in the first half, Smith fielded a punt at the Guilderland 42-yard line. He backtracked to elude two Schenectady defenders, found daylight down the left sideline and went untouched for a 58-yard touchdown return.

Paul Booker led Guilderland with 124 yards rushing on 23 carries and two touchdowns. While the Patriots were keying on Booker, Smith was able to hook up with Malamood three times for big passing plays in the first half.

Guilderland was 5-for-5 on third-down conversions in the first half and didn't punt the ball until the third quarter.

"We felt that going into the game that Schenectady had some big playmakers," coach Dan Penna said. "We knew that we wouldn't break as many long ones (plays) given the team speed on Schenectady.

"The offensive line, especially on third downs, really stepped up and gave Drew great protection, and he found his receivers."

Guilderland opened the scoring on the game's opening possession. Smith's 1-yard plunge finished a 12-play, 60-yard drive that took 6:10 off the clock.

Following a Schenectady punt, the Dutchmen rolled down the field on another 12-play drive that was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run by Booker. The drive covered 81 yards and took 6:52.

On the ensuing possession, Malamood intercepted a pass by Schenectady's Nicholas Ottati and returned the ball to the Schenectady 24. Four plays later, Smith scored the 1 to push the Dutchmen's lead to 20-0.

Much of the credit for the halftime cushion belonged to the Guilderland defense.

Thompson, Section II's leading rusher, gained 22 yards in the first half and 78 for the game. More telling is that Thompson's final run of the game, for 41 yards, was longer than his total yards rushing in his first 14 carries combined.

"We all stepped up today and got the job done," Malamood said. "Their offense can score at any point of the game. I can't say enough about Marc Thompson. We knew we had our hands full with him, and thankfully we were able to step up."

Schenectady rallied in the second half. Ottati threw touchdown passes to Joshua Mason and Marcus Brandon to close the gap to 26-13.

"We're young; hopefully we'll learn from this," Schenectady coach Carm DePoalo said.
