SCHENECTADY -- The Section II Exceptional Seniors All-Star football game turned out to be an extraordinary evening for the South. Led by a swarming defensive performance and plenty of offensive standouts, the South registered a convincing 38-7 victory over the North at Union College.

"The defense was really outstanding," South head coach Joe Burke of Albany High said. "They all played really, really well."

Mike Krogh (Troy), Dunea Lockwood (Cobleskill) and Ray Bellamy (Albany) all recorded interceptions for the South. Guilderland's Kyle Hussey blocked a punt that was recovered by Troy's Steven Leisenfelder.

Led by Hussey, Chris Gross (Troy), Chad Cassidy (La Salle), Keith Bateman (Shaker), Bill Bedford (Lansingburgh), Vito Angrisano (La Salle), Devon Diego (Bishop Maginn), Kevin McCormick (Averill Park) and Blake DiPace (Colonie), the South put constant pressure on the North's quarterbacks all evening.

Mohonasen quarterback Patrick Barnes started for the South and connected with Voorheesville tight end Tim Robinson on a touchdown pass. Pat Filkins (Ravena), Heath Furbeck (Colonie) and Joe Grassia (Mohonasen) scored on rushing touchdowns, while Zach White-Stellato (Albany) booted a pair of field goals for the South.

Mike Hepp (Lansingburgh), who fought through an ankle injury to play Thursday, broke off a long a run for the winners.

Burke praised the effort from his offensive lineman, including Mike Rezek (Troy), Mike Chura (Watervliet), Sean Kearney (Mohonasen), Don McBride (Ravena), Kyle Macey (Lansingburgh), Ken LaCasse (Hudson), Sean Fallon (Bishop Maginn), Mark Herrington (Columbia) and Kevin Harris (Averill Park).

Burke noted the work from his secondary, especially Leisenfelder, Lockwood, Bellamy and Kevin Forbes (Guilderland).
